Cotabato Province to host SRAA 2017


AMAS, Kidapawan City (Feb 14, 2017) – The Province of Cotabato will host the SOCCSKSARGEN Regional Athletic Association (SRAA) Meet this year which is slated on February 18-22, 2017.

Cotabato Schools Division Superintendent Omar Obas said DepEd provincial office is all set for its official hosting of the biggest and most comprehensive sports event of Region 12.

In the security and coordinative meeting held at the Provincial Governor’s Office, Obas discussed important matters in relation to the conduct of the 5-day competition featuring the finest athletes from the four provinces and city comprising SOCCSKSARGEN.

Obas said some of the discussions include safety and security of the delegates, billeting areas, food and accommodation were finalized.   “We are making all the groundwork count as we aim to conduct the 5-day affair successful and worth all our preparations” he added.

For her part, Governor Emmylou “Lala” J. Taliṅo-Mendoza said the meeting, which she called is to help DepEd Cotabato in all its ground preparations and other important concerns before the start of the event. She also expressed gladness that Cotabato Province will host and serve as the main venue for the SRAA which is expected to boost influx of local and national visitors or tourists.

“The Provincial Government of Cotabato fully supports this momentous event because this is an opportunity for us to prove our capability to handle a region-wide sports event and also to boost economic activity of the province”, Gov Taliṅo-Mendoza also said.

Most of the events of SRAA 2017 will be held in Kidapawan City and spread to adjacent municipalities of Matalam, M’lang, Makilala, Kabacan and others. The opening of the SRAA this year will be staged in the Provincial Capitol Complex in Amas, Kidapawan City.


SDS Obas said the preparations of the schools that will hosts the events are done continuously looking into the needs of the athletes ranging from sports facilities to billeting and other concerns. The provincial government has allotted some P2.5M from its Special Education Fund (SEF) to help the athletes from the athletes particularly in uniforms, food and accommodations.

“As partners, DepEd and the provincial government have exerted all efforts especially on the groundwork to make all delegations at ease and feel at home” Obas, said.

Other agencies like the BFP, PNP, AFP, DILG and LGUs have sent representatives in the coordinative meeting. Each of them expressed their full support to help the DepEd and provincial government attain its goal of coming up with a widely participated and successful sports event.

Meanwhile, the Cotabato Provincial Capitol Sports Complex is undergoing full preparations will serve as the main venue of the competition and will also be the site for the opening and closing ceremonies.

Obas expects around 3,900 athletes coming from 9 delegations which include the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Kidapawan, Tacurong, and Cotabato as well as the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and Cotabato. Some 600 technical sports officials will also arrive to preside different events.

The lined-up sports events for the meet consist of athletics, individual events, basketball, softball, soccer as well as archery, swimming and futsal.

SRAA, the biggest sports event in SOCCSKSARGEN so far, is part of the year-round sports program in Region 12 aimed at promoting sports as an integral part of Basic Education for the holistic development of the SOCCSKSARGEN athletes.

DepEd 12 Regional Director Arturo Bayucot, who will arrive in Kidapawan City to grace the opening of SRAA along with other dignitaries, said the competition will help student-athletes to become globally competitive and at the same time develop values such as sportsmanship, camaraderie and health consciousness.“

He also said SRAA will equally broaden the bases for discovering potential and talented athletes from elementary and high school students compete in national competitions such as the Batang Pinoy and the Palarong Pambansa. The education official enunciated the remarkable performances of athletes from SOCCSKSARGEN and hopes it will be duplicated this year.

Atty. Revsee A. Escobedo, DepEd Assistant Secretary for Procurement and Project Management is expected to arrive at the opening ceremonies on Feb. 18 as the keynote speaker which is expected to make the sports event more significant. (JIMMY STA. CRUZ-PGO Media Center)
